Zune Game with HD: Can you take PSP, iPhone, Nintendo DS?

While there is no shortage of handheld Game Systems on the market – the Nintendo DS and DSi are PSP selling well and continues to hang in there, while the App Store is expanding its catalog every minute – one of the seemingly no-brainer bet in the field of mobile games has not yet happened: the Zune.

We say "obvious" for several reasons:
* Microsoft has a platform of success in the games that stand out Xbox 360 online and downloadable games.
* Microsoft, compared with Sony and Nintendo, is more capable of taking on Apple in terms of media software store management and the ability to build an equivalent music / games / movie catalog, and make the product compatible PC.
* The Zune now plays HD games.

The first point is obvious. The second is debatable, but what we say because Sony, while having a decent library media PSN, but not is historically great in creating cross-platform software to synchronize the PSP, and global reach of Microsoft software is simply stronger. The third is technically true – Microsoft has launched a small collection of completely free to play, ad-supported games for its Zune HD OLED-selected last month and one of them happens to be an adaptation of Project Gotham Racing.

It's an interesting perspective (and one that we asked before) because the Zune HD processor, an Nvidia Tegra has so much processing muscle and high-definition 3D graphics capability. We downloaded and played all the Zune HD games available today – all 12 of them – with some curiosity to see if the Zune could compete as a gaming device.

Overall, the Zune HD games are of the same quality for iPod Touch iPhone and titles. The Zune HD has an accelerometer and multitouch, like the iPod Touch, but its screen is smaller, making it even more difficult controls without feeling awkward. Now to be fair, all Zune games are free, and therefore many have demonstration. PGR, with Ferrari, is a minimalist game and a "lite" version. Still, track and control graphics are impressive, and definitely the tactile quality. Other games like Audiosurf tilt (which generates the music tracks) and a Texas hold 'em, are better than most of the gifts, but are probably not pay more titles a few dollars.

The most obvious idea would be to extend the Zune HD size slightly, adding a physical controller (perhaps similar to the sliding PSP Go), and then open a Zune gaming market that is synchronized with Xbox Live. A big step towards this being a possibility was the recent Xbox 360 update opened a market on the Zune 360. While not currently offer games, Microsoft already allows Zunes and Xbox Live to share funds from the accounts of digital transactions, opening a door without problems for a mobile Game Console ecosystems.

The current Zune HD is so small – smaller than a PSP or an iPod Touch Go to a degree significant – that Microsoft would even sell a gamepad clip (with a speaker, preferably) and still have a portable device that was not bulky. And its price is competitive with the PSP, iPod Touch and Nintendo DS, at $ 219 for a 16GB model.

Would you want a Microsoft Zune / Xbox portable? I'd say the answer would be yes, provided they actually used the physical checks. And if you were able to round up the Xbox Live Arcade community development (and even the multitude indie XNA) to make games that could catch on much faster than anyone would expect.

Right now, the Zune HD is a platform game. But even in its present Thus, it might be a simple change in strategy. The question is, is there room for another mobile gaming platform?
